“In a human body, a major nerve extending from lower end of spinal cord to the back of thigh, and dividing above the knee joint this is the nerve with largest diameter in human called SCIATIC NERVE.”
This sciatic nerve is the dominant nerve that innervates the lower back and lower extremities travels from spines through the pelvis and down each leg including calf, ankle and back portion of the knee it supplies sensation of the sole of the foot, the ankle and the entire lower leg, and the back of thigh. As it is divided into two parts of the body it divide balance in both parts equally. It is a mixed function nerve, meaning that it contains both sensory neurons and motor neurons. This means it simultaneously enable muscles to feel and move.
Damage in sciatic nerve, can result in numerous symptoms, including lower back pain, muscles weakness and reflex abnormalities. Although it can damage anywhere, symptoms are usually present in lower leg, such as inability to bend the knee, shooting pain from the buttocks to lower leg, or difficulty in rotating or bending the foot.
Sciatica is also caused by the damage of sciatic nerves, this is dangerous. Basically it is caused by the compressed nerve root in the lumber (lower) spine. Often the word sciatica is confused with the general back pain. Although the sciatica is not just limited to back only. Sciatica is not a problem but this is rather a symptom of another problem related to sciatic nerve. Some experts estimated that up to 40% people will face sciatica in their lives ones. Sciatica is a common symptoms with several different medical conditions, however, an estimated 90% of cases are due to herniated slipped disc. A herniated slipped disc occurs when a disc is temporarily pushed out of a place, putting pressure on sciatic nerves.
Age is also the main factor, due to deterioration of disc, people in their 30s and 40s have higher risk of developing sciatica. Same thing happened with me I was about 35 when I suffered it, more than this I did the job to carry heavy loads for a longer time its became more critical then.
It was the weather of cold, in night when I came back to home after job, sitting with my 2 little kids. I was drinking tea, suddenly the cup of tea dropped from my hand, there started severe pain in my legs, and this was like Time of death came to me at once. I was shouting take me to hospital, take me to hospital my children started to cry then my wife took me to hospital.
After some time when I got my sensations back, doctor gave me some injections. There was little pain in legs but literally I was unable to stand. Doctor guided my wife for some medicines and said that your husband is suffering from acute sciatica. He also said:
“Acute sciatica typically takes time of 4-8 weeks endless sciatica (long haul) chronic sciatica, then again, may require non-intrusive treatment, which can incorporate work out, connected warmth, and different systems. In uncommon cases, surgery may be required”.
After giving full treatment we left hospital and came back to home again. It was little pain back in my back and lower limbs because of injection effect.
Next day I and my wife went for complete x-ray and MRI tests after a long time tests completed. Doctors guided me for some exercises by physiotherapist so that after some time I should be able to join my job, and live happy life again.
In evening of the same day we came back to home again, from the next day physiotherapist came to home daily, He helped me to make my legs and back to move. He guided me some exercises to do daily He told me to take your left leg and place your lower leg against the knee .Hold the position for a minute before changing legs. This extends the little piriformis muscle, which sometimes gets to be distinctly aroused and presses against the sciatic nerve causing pain repeat by exchanging sides and doing likewise exercise with the other leg. He further said: The excessive sciatica exercises serves two fundamental needs:
- Lessens the sciatic pain in the close term
• Gives conditioning to help prevent future repeats of the pain.
Other exercises include to relief back pain almost every one can get benefit through it, stretching the ligaments, tendons, and muscles in the back, legs, buttocks, and around the spines. Patient like me with ongoing back pain may find it takes week or months of stretching and other back exercises to mobilize the spines and soft tissues, but will find that meaningful and sustained relief of back pain will usually follow the increase in motion.
Physiotherapist guided me to keep somethings in a mind carefully before start the exercises
-Wear comfortable clothes that won’t bind
-stretching should be pain free, should not be too hard that start pain again and again,
-Move into stretch slowly, do not bounce that can cause tear of muscles.
-Stretch on clean and flat surface that is large enough to move freely.
-Hold stretch long enough for 20-30 seconds and allow muscles and joint to become loose. Do not give pressure on yourself.
– Repeat the stretch daily from 5 to 10 minutes.
Doctor, my wife and my children helped me a lot in that hard time, I did exercises of back also he guided me to bend the back for maximum 20 seconds then slowly rise up band at least 10 times then take deep breath. A stiff back sometimes accompanied by stiff neck he guided me to move chin to chest when standing or sitting, gently bend the head forward while bringing the chin toward the chest until a stretch is felt in the back of neck. Also move ear to shoulders, this exercises stretches neck area below the ears as well as the top of the shoulders. To begin, gently bend the neck to one side as if to touch the ears to the shoulders until the stretched is felt in aside of a neck. Switch to stretch the other side. This was too hard for me to do exercises daily because of too much pain but I did as well as took medicines on daily basis because I knew I will get my goal one day.
Day by day I improved my exercises skills, I became better days passes and I did my work took medicines at time and physiotherapist helped me a lot in that. Finally 7 weeks passed and I felt much better than before and could even run me, my wife and my children felt happy a lot I became able to go on my job again. And learnt lesson that human body is too much complicated any little damage can harm and can create too much problems for many days we should keep doing exercises on daily basis due to this, human body can bear a lot of weight over their shoulders and body will be active in every work so that body will be away from every dangers and harm…!!
